What is an Addiction?
Addiction is defined as not having control over doing, taking or using something to the point where it could be harmful to you.
How can addictions affect you?
The strain of managing an addiction can severely damage your work life and relationships. In the case of substance misuse (e.g. drugs and alcohol), an addiction can have severe psychological and physical effects.
Some studies suggest environmental factors, such as being around other people with addictions, are thought to increase the risk.
What can people be addicted to?
Addiction is most commonly associated with gambling, drugs, alcohol and nicotine, but it’s possible to be addicted to just about anything.
What causes addictions?
There are lots of causes of addictions, but in the case of drugs, alcohol and nicotine, these substances affect the way you feel, both physically and mentally. These feelings can be enjoyable and create a powerful urge to use the substances again.
Gambling may result in a similar mental “high” after a win, followed by a strong urge to try again and recreate that feeling. Gambling can develop into a habit that becomes very hard to stop.

Anyone can develop an addiction. James Argent, a reality star, has battled drink and drug addiction since finding fame on TOWIE. James has spoken out about his cocaine addiction and how he suffered two near-fatal overdoses after hitting “rock bottom” which lead to him getting help and reaching out to friends. After a 10-week rehabilitation camp, he now regularly visits a local out-patient facility to maintain his sobriety.
He says he wants to “own” his past addiction troubles like other famous faces including Davina McCall, Russell Brand and Robbie Williams. “I look up to those people, they inspire me,” he said. “I feel like they’ve got a similar story to me, they’ve owned it and they’ve got themselves better and gone on to achieve incredible things, so why can’t I?”
